Having been cancelled in 2020, Pilning Flower Show returned last Saturday.

Great efforts had been made to make St Peter’s School safe for competitors and visitors, with face coverings encouraged and a one-way system in place.

As well as the competitions there were refreshments, presentations, a raffle and a charity auction - held outside on a gloriously sunny afternoon.

The principal winner on the day was Diane Lloyd with best in show for her small decorated cakes beautifully finished with realistic red roses in icing.

The Roper family also starred, with Bob Roper going home with four trophies from the vegetable classes, wife Rosemarie winning a further two and grandchildren Ollie best entry in the younger children’s classes and Alfie tallest sunflower.

Catherine Fish was close to best in show with her woollen cockerel and scored highest points in the baking section.

Photography was dominated by Bob Edwards who took four 1st’s and a 2nd in the seven classes, as was Lizzie Latham Roberts who won four of the five children 14 years and under classes.

As well as many returning regulars, Flower Show newcomers; David I’Anson and Helen and Jon Oates also won cups. A full set of results will be published on Pilning Flower Show’s Facebook page.

Although numbers of entries were down slightly on recent years, numbers of visitors were up.

The generosity shown in the auction and the raffle meant the organisers were able to present a healthy cheque to Becky Griffin of the Scouts for the Community Defibrillators fund.

The show will return next year on August 27.
