PLANS to turn a house in a village near Yate into a new children’s home have been put forward.

Care home company Bristol Care Group has applied for permission to convert a detached two storey property in New Road, Rangeworthy into a children’s home.

The change of use application was submitted to South Gloucestershire Council on Thursday, April 25.

It is understood, if approved, the property would house up to three children aged between eight and 18.

However, it is understood there would be no physical alterations to the building or surroundings.

Residents would be looked after by two carers sleeping overnight and working on a rota basis, with a further care manager visiting during the day.

Floor plans show the property with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a shower room, living room, kitchen and utility room plus a private garden area.

According to a planning document, the company says it will support young people who may have emotional and behavioural difficulties, display drug and alcohol related issues, have a history of self-harm or are victims of abuse.

A planning document reads: “The home will aim to provide a smooth transition for children and young people who inhabit it, through careful planning and consideration.

“It will primarily serve medium to long term placements in order to minimise disruption to residents.

“There will be no external alterations to the building or surroundings.

“From the outside, there will be no change in the appearance or character of the dwelling.

“The purpose of the home would be to support the children to build their confidence, help them in developing life skills and prepare them for life when they leave the home to fend for themselves.

“This type of support has been found to be most effective in helping these children to have normal lives and not experience problems in later life.

“During the day it is expected that the children would engage in various activities, plus attend a mainstream or special school.

“The proposed children’s home seeks to replicate as closely as possible a normal family environment.

“This type of provision is to help children who often, through no fault of their own, have not had good parenting in their early years.

“This home would be registered with, regulated by, and regularly inspected by, Ofsted.

“Having the appropriate planning consent will not by itself enable a residential children’s home to open at the property if it does not also meet the strict regulatory requirements set out by Ofsted.”
