A LONE burglar has struck a Thornbury convenience store in the early hours of this morning, smashing a window to steal £150 of alcohol.

The attack on the Co-op shop on Thornbury High Street took place at 2.24am, with a single individual being caught on CCTV smashing the front window with a rock.

Police arrived on the scene around ten minutes later, having been alerted by the store’s alarm system.

Officers believe the intruder set the alarms off while attempting to tamper with the door lock and smashed the glass after being disturbed.

The only items taken in the raid were six bottles of spirit alcohol, valued at around £150, with the rest of the store seemingly untouched.

The store and the Post Office at the rear opened at 11.30am this morning after remaining closed temporarily to repair the damage, with the door currently boarded up.

Thornbury beat manager PC Natalie Jones said: “We are currently viewing the store CCTV as well as footage from the High Street cameras to try and identify the intruder as, given the early hour, we have had no eye witnesses come forward.

“The offender can be seen wearing a dark jacket with a grey hoodie underneath, as well as a hat and jeans.

“We believe that the individual might have been picked up by a vehicle after exiting the store but we are awaiting confirmation of that."

PC Jones added: “It is very odd for a smash and grab job to take so little. The intruder took no cigarettes or scratch cards. Normally in cases like this they would take much more.

“It is very inconvenient to the store and its customers, especially to those wanting to use the Post Office as it is the only one in the town.”

Officers have asked for anyone who might be able to assist in inquiries to call 101 immediately.
