A CHARITY in Yate which loans out electric scooters and wheelchairs to give people independence has celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Shopmobility, based at Yate Library, turned 10 years old on April 24 and held an event to mark the milestone on Friday (April 29).

An idea for the lifeline scheme was first raised in 2003 by the late Keith Holloway and came into operation in Yate Shopping Centre three years later under its first chairman Sue Gawler.

It now boasts a fleet of 16 scooters and 1,160 members.

Project worker Sheridan Crew said: “Shopmobility is being used by more people from throughout South Gloucestershire and we are seeing a growing need to support people with mobility problems with all aspects of their disability.

“We recognise the support needs of carers and how socially isolating lack of mobility and being a carer can be.

“'We directly support or signpost people to other agencies as and when required in seeking to improve quality of life or overcome difficulties being faced.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall, who visited the scheme on its birthday, said: "I was delighted to join Shopmobility on their 10-year anniversary to celebrate the excellent support it provides to people with mobility problems and their carers locally.

“I often speak to people who explain what a difference this charity makes to their independence and inclusion in our local community. I would like to thank Shopmobility once again for their excellent work, and wish them a very happy 10th birthday."
