THE grandfather of Leicester City midfielder Andy King has spoken of his sheer pride at the club’s shock Premier League win.

John King, born and bred in Chipping Sodbury, said he was thrilled his grandson’s club of 12 years took the title in a fairy tale ending after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspurs on Bank Holiday Monday.

Leicester started the campaign as 5,000-1 outsiders after almost being relegated last season.

Mr King, the paternal grandfather of 27-year-old Andy, told the Gazette: “I am feeling very proud.

“He is a good, level-headed chap.

“I have sent my congratulations to my grandson and the whole team by telephone and text.”

Mr King, a retired chief auditor for the former North Avon District Council, said Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri took a good approach to Monday’s match.

“I think the manager had the right idea,” said 91-year-old Mr King, who watched the Chelsea – Spurs games at his home in Melbourne Drive. “He played it down rather than going round singing about it.

“I watch most of the matches and am very proud.

“I see my grandson fairly regularly. He is at Leicester most of the time but visits me from time to time.”

Andy King has made over 300 appearances for Leicester and has become the only player since the formation of the Premier League to win League One, the Championship and the Premier League. A Welsh international through his maternal grandfather, he has over 30 international caps.
