West Women's Hockey League

Berkeley Division One

Redland 2nds 1 Thornbury 1

AN INJURY to Tess Wheatley and the early departure of Elaine Arnold cost Thornbury in this game.

Another committed performance saw Thornbury take the lead midway through the first half through captain Sian Fuller following a period of sustained pressure. Lucy Woodruff and Ellie Morgan were prominent with some excellent contributions in attack.

Poppy Woolnough was unfortunate when a powerful effort rebounded from the post and an Amanda McGarry effort shaved the crossbar.

The slender goal lead was never likely to be enough and so it proved.

Thornbury , a player short after Arnold left early to umpire the second team game, were unable to mount a strong defence and conceded an equalising goal to the home side.

Rachel Gardner and Becky Jones gave their usual committed performances along with Wheatley before her injury.

Sarah Brownhill foraged in midfield for Thornbury, who will rue the failure to get maximum points.

Thornbury visit Somerset Gryphons on Saturday for a friendly fixture.

Division Two

Thornbury 2nds 0 South Gloucs 1

THORNBURY, with player of the match Sara Newman prominent, were unfortunate to concede a late goal to South Gloucs.

Harriet Ryan and Rachel Underwood impressed for the home side and Amy Morse, Sarah Brearley and Claire Johnson also shone.

Lorna Thornton was unlucky not to equalise in the last minutes to earn Thornbury a deserved point.

Thornbury host Cirencester on Saturday at Castle School (midday) in a friendly fixture.
