THORNBURY Cricket club youth chairman John ‘Wormers’ Wormwell won a lifetime’s achievement award at this week’s Bristol Youth League awards dinner.

John started playing competitive cricket for his club at 16 years of age in an era when there was no youth cricket system, no Sky TV and not even a proper Bristol Youth League.

He found time in his busy professional life as something of a computer pioneer to get married and start a family.

His coaching began with his own boys who were taught to take a slip catch before they were walking.

When his oldest boy reached seven he thought: "to progress he needs some coaching." So he started coaching the youth team at his club. Both his boys were coached there. Both still play.

He’s been happy to see his boys rise up through the ranks.

He played on himself, headed up the youth section at the club and enjoyed the rare distinction of playing in the senior team with his sons.

His many colleagues and friends were on hand to congratulate him warmly.
