WITH the FIFA Women’s World Cup just around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities for women in the county to get involved with the sport in the run up to the event.

Women and Girls Football Fortnight continues until Friday, June 6 and whether it's your first time playing, or you would like to get involved in coaching or running a team, there is something for everyone at a wide variety of locations.

Free football sessions for girls of all abilities aged between 5 and 16 can join in the fun at Dursley War Memorial (GL11 4BJ) on Friday, June 5.

U8s get their go from 5-6pm, U10s between 6-7pm and U12s, U14s and U16s from 6-7.30pm.

Meanwhile the GFA’s own 3G facility at Oaklands Park, Almondsbury, is the venue for an all-day South West Counties Women’s Rep Team Tournament on Saturday, June 6, kicking off at 10.30am.

High-level players representing teams from Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon and Dorset will be showcasing their skills at the event.

Entry is free for spectators and the competition is scheduled to conclude at 4.30pm.

GFA women and girls football development officer, Alexis Lunn-Gadd, said: “Expectations in the game nationally are high with the FIFA Women’s World Cup coming up and England head to Canada with high expectations thanks to their 100 per cent winning record in qualifying.

“All the games are to be shown live on the BBC so it’s an exciting time for the female game.

“We wanted to join in by ensuring there are plenty of ways to get involved across the county and we’re confident our Women and Girls Football Fortnight will help to raise the profile of the game by linking with local schools, clubs and our partners to promote football to everyone.”
