CITY gained their sixth win of the season on Saturday with a huge 1-0 away victory at fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic.

Watching on was new City head coach Lee Johnson who was appointed just hours before the match.

The club had announced on Friday that they had been given permission by Johnson’s club Barnsley to speak to the son of former City supremo Gary Johnson and negotiations ended in Johnson being offered the City hot-seat and duly accepting.

The appointment certainly comes as a bit of a surprise given City’s current predicament and Johnson’s age – he becomes the youngest manager in the Championship at just 34 years of age.

However, it is more the timing that is surprising as Johnson and City owner Steve Lansdown have reportedly remained close since Johnson’s playing days at the club and so his return as manager was always likely. Despite being very young for a manager, Johnson is not inexperienced having taken charge of over 150 games for Oldham and Barnsley.

He did a very good job at Oldham in difficult circumstances, though more recently, at Barnsley, he was struggling until a run of six straight wins prior to his departure.

Johnson is highly rated within the game as a modern, forward-thinking coach and he speaks about the game in an impressive manner.

But he will have to hit the ground running in terms of results if he is to rescue us from relegation back to League One.

Caretaker manager John Pemberton took seven points from his four games in charge and Johnson would be advised not to change too much in terms of personnel and formation given this recent form.

Johnson’s first game in charge sees the visit of Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town to Ashton Gate (3pm).

The Tractor Boys have been hovering around the play-off places all season though their current form is patchy having only won one of their last four games.

City were a little unlucky not to beat them at Portman Road in September – conceding a late equaliser – so hopefully Lady Luck will shine on Lee Johnson’s first game in charge on Saturday.
